This 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A coupe is one of approximately 2,400 produced to homologate the model for competition in the SCCA’s Trans-Am series. T/A-specific equipment included a flat-black fiberglass hood, a rear spoiler, longitudinal black stripes, and a side-outlet dual exhaust system. Power is supplied by a replacement 340ci V8 that has been bored and stroked to displace 422ci, and the car is fitted with triple Holley two-barrel carburetors and a four-speed manual transmission. Finished in red over red vinyl, the vehicle also features body-color 15″ steel wheels, bright hubcaps and trim rings, power-assisted brakes, dual side mirrors, a Hurst pistol-grip shifter, a center console, and a Chrysler AM radio. After spending years in Virginia, the car underwent a rotisserie refurbishment around 2014 and was purchased by the current owner in 2020.
The car was finished from the factory in Bright Red (FE5) and reportedly was repainted during the aforementioned refurbishment. A matte-black fiberglass hood with a raised intake scoop as well as blacked-out headlight and taillight panels were standard on the T/A, as were black side stripes, side-exit exhaust pipes, “chin-whisker” front spoilers, and a “duck tail” rear spoiler. Further exterior details include chrome bumpers, hood pins, dual side mirrors, and a flip-up fuel door. The seller notes a blemish in the paint behind the driver-side rear window.
Body-color 15″ steel wheels have bright hubcaps and trim rings and are mounted with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires measuring 225/60 in front and 235/60 out back. Challenger T/A cars were equipped with Rallye Suspension, which featured a larger front sway bar, a rear sway bar, heavy-duty shock absorbers, and increased camber of the rear springs. Braking is provided by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.
The front bucket seats are trimmed in red vinyl, and interior appointments include woodgrain trim accents, a center console, a Hurst pistol-grip shifter, and a cabin heater. The clock, radio, and windshield wipers are inoperable.
The steering wheel has a woodgrain rim complemented by a red hub and spokes. Rallye instrumentation consists of a 150-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock, and a combination gauge containing readouts for fuel level, coolant temperature, amperage, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 86k miles, approximately 500 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The replacement 340ci LA V8 is said to utilize a T/A-specific block and was installed in this car during the 2014 refurbishment following a rebuild that implemented a .060″ overbore and a 4.00″ stroke resulting in a total displacement of 422ci. The engine is fitted with an Edelbrock intake manifold, three Holley two-barrel carburetors, aftermarket rocker arms, and an orange-painted block, intake manifold, air-cleaner assembly, and valve covers.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The underside has been refinished in red.
